Ysleta Overcomes Early Deficit, Defeats Rival Riverside 27-17

The Ysleta Indians and Riverside Rangers renewed their rivalry for the 45th time on Homecoming night for the Indians. 

The Rangers jumped out to an early 14-0 lead with a three yard touchdown run by quarterback Isaac Marrufo and an 81-yard touchdown pass by Marrufo to his tight end Frank Estrada.  Marrufo would finish the game 4 of 13 for 109 yards and the one touchdown pass and 120 yards rushing on 24 carries with one touchdown.

Ysleta would answer back with Lucas Flores connecting with Giovanni Martinez for a 57 yard touchdown to make it 14-7.  Riverside would add an Alexis Mijarez 34-yard field goal to extend their lead to 17-7, before the Indians’ Isaac Jaramillo would make a 39-yard field goal of his own to make it 17-10 at halftime.

It would be all Ysleta in the second half that would start with Flores connecting with Martinez a second time, this time a 13-yard completion with 5:13 remaining in the third quarter to tie up the game a 17-all.  Jaramillo would then add a 24-yard field goal to give the Indians their first lead at 20-17 to end the third quarter.  Ysleta would add an Alexis Vasquez two yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and hold on for the 27-17 victory.

Giovanni Martinez would finish with nine catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns to be named the Speaking Rock Player of the Game.  Lucas Flores  finished 17 of 27 for 275 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.  He also had 49 yards rushing on 11 carries, and came down with the interception in the endzone with 31 seconds remaining in the ball game that sealed the final score.

Ysleta improves to 4-4 overall and 1-2 in District 1-5A D2 play—ending a four game losing streak.  Riverside dropped their second straight game to fall to 4-4, 1-2.
