The Ysleta Indians and Riverside Rangers renewed their heated rivalry with both teams coming off tough losses last week; tied at 1-1 in Division II District 1-5A play.  Ysleta began with a long drive that ended with a missed field goal, before scoring a touchdown on their next with Salazar’s eighth rushing touchdown on the season and the early 6-0 lead.  The score came after CB Jorge Martinez stripped Kevin Mendoza and recovered the fumble, giving the Indians a short field to work with.

After several stalled drives, the Rangers were able to even the game at 6-6 with a ten yard run by Luis Lozano halfway through the second quarter.  After the Riverside defense stalled Ysleta’s offense, their went on long time-consuming drive that ended with a 31-yard field goal and the 9-6 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, an Ozzie Araiza interception set up the Indians with another short field that allowed them to retake the lead.  The score came when Josiah Salazar found Giovanni Martinez for the 14-yard score, making the score 13-9.  Early in the fourth quarter, Ysleta punted after a stalled drive.  Riverside’s Jerald Davis picked up the ball on a bounce before Martinez stripped the ball away and ran it in from 15 yards out for the 19-9 lead.  Two late scores would give the Indians the 33-9 victory.

Ysleta improved to 7-1 overall, 2-1 in district play and will host the Hanks Knights next week.  Riverside dropped to 3-5 overall, 1-2 in district play and will host the Parkland Matadors next week.  Giovanni Martinez was named the Casa Nissan Player of the Game after he contributed 74 receiving yards on four receptions and the go ahead score; he also scored on the fumble recovery while on special teams on the following drive.
