Week 8 of Texas High School Football saw the #2 ranked team in the TownTalk Sports El Paso Power 8 Poll, welcome the Troopers of Eastwood in a District 5-A Division 1 match up.

It was Homecoming Night at Conquest Stadium, where the 4-1 Conquistadores were looking to continue their dominance, outscoring their opponents 137-35 in the last 3 games. Del Valle welcomed in the 3-3 Eastwood Troopers, who had a huge win last week over Montwood.

Eastwood began the pregame festivities with a performance called “The Contender” and that would be fitting for some foreshadowing.

The Troopers dominated the first quarter with a drive that went 75 yards, and ate up almost 8 minutes of clock, ending in a 1 yard TD run by QB Christian Castaneda.

The second quarter would see a scoring barrage by Del Valle and star quarterback Raymond Montez.  Aided by three Eastwood turnovers, the Conquistadores scored on passes of 9 and 30 yards to Danny Cotrez and Karch Gardiner respectfully.  Montez ran in a 1 yard TD, and Del Valle entered Halftime with a 21-10 lead.

The lengthy Halftime festivities seemed to take the Conquistadores off their rhythm as their first drive ended in a three and out. The Trooper offense came out with a game plan similar to the first half. A heave dose of the run game from Running Back Noah Rios and Christian Castaneda, but ended in a 14 yard TD pass on a wheel route out of the back field to Rios.

Del Valle’s offense was unable to sustain any momentum and the Conquistadores’ Raymond Montez threw two costly interceptions that resulted in two Eastwood touchdowns and just like that, Eastwood found themselves up by a score of 32-21.

The run heavy offense of Eastwood kept the ball out of Montez and the Conquistadores hands for the majority of the second half and kept the home team off balance. A solid performance in the second half propelled Christian Castaneda to the Casa Nissan Player of the game.

Going 9-14 for 173 and 2 TD’s, and rushing 9 times for 57 yards, only in the second half, Castaneda finished the day 14-26 for 228 and 2 TD’s and 21 rushes for 115 yards and a TD.  Eastwood’s Noah Rios ran the ball for 116 yards and a TD on 23 attempts and a reception for a 14 yard TD.

Eastwood looks to improve this upcoming week to 5-3 as they face off vs. the 3-4 Chapin Huskies at home and Del Valle looks to bounce back off this hard loss as they meet the 0-7 Bel Air Highlanders on the road.
