In a puzzling move, Plano ISD announced that the September 6th game with Plano and El Paso Eastwood has been canceled. Eastwood was set to travel to the Dallas area for the second straight year in the non-district tilt.
“After consulting with local law enforcement agencies, Plano ISD administrators felt obligated to prioritize the safety of the participating players, students, families and communities, and have concluded that the timing of the game falls too soon after the tragedy in El Paso,” the district’s release said
“We grieve with our neighbors in El Paso and are heartbroken that what is happening in society today is affecting our kids and our communities,” said Plano ISD Superintendent Sara Bonser said in the release. “Our students and coaches were eager for this opportunity to come together with Eastwood High to promote a message of compassion and healing, but what should be a celebratory event would be encumbered by safety concerns for the participants and fans of both teams. Our top priority must be the safety of all.”
The move comes after the El Paso Wal-Mart shooting in the Cielo Vista Mall area on August 3rd in which the alleged shooter is a former Plano ISD student who is currently being detained in the El Paso County Jail under a Capital Murder charge.
Eastwood and Plano met last year, and it was a part of a two-year agreement in where Eastwood was to take home half of the earnings from the ticket money collected at the gate in this years game which had been previously agreed upon before the events in El Paso.
This now leaves Eastwood scrambling for a Week 2 opponent.
