El Dorado Aztecs @ #3 Pebble Hills Spartans @SAC

Channel: Pebble Hills Spartans channel: www.towntalksportselpaso.com

Broadcasters: Mando “The Monster” Medina and Coach Tony Grijalva

El Dorado starts life in 5A with a 6A opponent that has a stud running back in their season opener.  El Dorado has tons of questions after graduating do-it-all quarterback Ced Barfield who is now at San Diego State.  Caleb Gerber will try to match his 1,600-yard rushing season from a year ago, but the Spartans lost 40-plus seniors so plenty of unproven talent will get their crack at the varsity level.

Eastwood will roll out a new defensive scheme, while Americas will debut their next star running back.  Chris Castaneda will lead Eastwood’s high-flying offense which is looking for some new pass catchers to break out. Americas sophomore running back Aaron Dumas could be the next star running back to come out of the Americas program, and is a player to watch in this one.  This could be the best game of the night and will come down to the last possession.

#4 Andress Eagles @ Coronado Thunderbirds

Broadcasters: Mike Montes and Cole Freytag

Channel: Andress and Coronado channels: www.towntalksportselpaso.com

Two playoff teams from 2017 square off to open 2018.  Andress returns a host of offensive talent and will be looking for consistency from an almost new offensive line.  Coronado will be debuting a new offensive coordinator and has a very talented defense that could be a top unit in District 1-6A.  If Coronado can run the football, they can easily control the tempo, but sustaining drives will be key for each team.

Bel Air Highlanders @ Austin Panthers

Broadcasters: Paul David Oliver and Paul Torres

Channel: Bel Air and Austin channels: www.towntalksportselpaso.com

Austin enters 2018 with high expectations, while Bel Air retools and rebuilds after nearly upsetting Andress in the playoffs this year.  Bel Air’s Devin Loray could be the best player on the field for either side.  Austin’s experience could be a major factor as a young Highlander squad finds their way early in the season.

Mayfield Trojans @ #2 Del Valle Conquistadors

Broadcasters: Mando “The Monster” Medina and Coach Tony Grijalva

Channel: Del Valle Channel: www.towntalksportselpaso.com

One of the El Paso’s elite programs faces a Las Cruces program looking to regain respect in their state.  Del Valle starts their grueling non-district schedule against Mayfield who routed their week one opponent last week.  Mayfield will bring a much-improved squad after a down year in 2017    A lot is expected out of the Del Valle offense this year, and a good measuring stick will be week one against a yearly New Mexico Powerhouse.

#8 Eastlake Falcons @ Canutillo Eagles

Broadcasters: Abel Carillo and Peter Carillo

Channel: Eastlake and Canutillo Channels: www.towntalksportselpaso.com

Two perennial playoff teams meet in week one with pride, and early season momentum.  Both teams will be replacing key offensive players, so this could turn into a defensive struggle early in the game.  Both teams will be contenders in their district and will find out a lot about themselves in a week one classic battle.

#1 Parkland Matadors @ Burges Mustangs

Broadcasters: Shawn Murphy and Sergio Roballi

Channel: Burges and Parkland Channels: www.towntalksportselpaso.com

Deion Hankins and the number one ranked Parkland Matadors start their 2018 journey against a Burges team that will have a cast of new offensive players.  Hankins needs just four yards to break the all-time career mark for rushing yards in El Paso.  Burges will be looking to replace a talented quarterback, running back and wide receiver who all graduated so some early season growing pains could be in store for Burges.

El Paso High Tigers @ Horizon Scorpions

Broadcasters: Chris Gomez and Fred Gonzales

Channel: El Paso and Horizon Channels: www.towntalksportselpaso.com

El Paso has the talent to sneak into the playoffs but will tested on the road in the High Desert.  Horizon is looking to turn things around after consecutive losing seasons.  Both teams have a chance to gain momentum and build off a solid start with a win.  El Paso’s Marko Kennedy is one to keep an eye on as he will play all over the field.  Another close game that will come down to turnovers and the final possession.

Jefferson Silver Foxes @ Ysleta Indians

Broadcasters: Alex Rodriguez and Henry Reyna

Channel: Jefferson and Ysleta Channels: www.towntalksportselpaso.com

Jeff is coming off a banner year in where they snapped a lengthy playoff drought.  Ysleta returns a host of experienced players including two-way stud Ozzy Araiza.  Ysleta is our dark horse surprise of the season and should be tested by a very physical Jefferson squad.
