With the last playoff spot on the line for both the Austin Panthers and El Paso Tigers in this season finale game, both teams came out with high energy and momentum.
The Tigers jumped out to a 5-0 lead; however, the Panthers then had a 8-0 by having their first lead of the game, 8-5. The Panthers held onto the lead the rest of the first half, as they went into halftime with a 20-16 advantage.
With some clutch plays by El Paso’s Johnny Melvin, he brought the Tigers to life in the second half. Both teams exchanged the lead on many possessions. Finally, in the fourth quarter, the player of the game – Melvin with 22 points – with some key defensive stops and late baskets earned the Tigers the 48-42 victory over the Panthers.
The Tigers will be involved in a coin flip to determine the fourth spot in district 1-5a and to see who plays Parkland in the bi-district round of the playoffs.
