Socorro and Franklin had playoff droughts, Socorro’s was the longest, since 1997 the bulldogs have missed the playoffs. Until tonight, when they beat Franklin 58-51 in overtime.

Early on the battle was back and fourth, Socorro started in front and looked strong,  gaining a lead trying to leave the Cougars behind but, Franklin would fight back and move ahead leading at the half 24-17.

The second half adjustments were put into place and it seemed like Franklin’s adjustments made the biggest impact. The fast paced tempo gave the Cougars a 12 point advantage in the 3rd quarter, Socorro needed to act quickly and cut into the deficit. Oscar and Zac Velasquez combined for 23 points nearly half of Franklin’s points and seemed to be in command of the backcourt.

Down the stretch Matt Pena lead the Bulldogs to victory as he lead the offense with assists and clutch free throws. He would finish with 21 points and my MVP vote. The biggest assists he had were to Eddie Franco who just had 2 points in the first half caught fire and hit three 3’s and a total of 16 points. The two captains for the bulldogs combined for 63% of the 58 points.

The Socorro Bulldogs will face Odessa Permian on Tuesday in the Bi-District round of 6A boys hoops playoffs. Game will be in Alpine at Sul Ross State. Tip off at 3:30 p.m.
