The Burges Mustangs took advantage of the bye week last week and took the fight to the Andress Eagles with a huge 23-16 victory—snapping the Eagles 20-game district winning streak—at Allen Sepkowitz Stadium.
Andress started the game with an eight play drive that ended with a 32-yard Felipe Ruiz field goal to start 3-0. Burges quickly answered with a 37-yard touchdown run by quarterback AJ Johnson to go up 7-3.
The chess match would continue in the second quarter when the Eagles capitalized on a Mustang error; a high snap on a punt attempt that threw the ball into the endzone and Darren Bryant would fall on the loose ball for the Andress touchdown. The missed extra point attempt, however, left the score at 9-7. Johnson would connect with Tavorous Jones for a 38-yard completion to the Andress 21 yard line. On the next play, wide receiver Alec Marenco took a backwards lateral and completed the 21-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Hewlen, who tiptoed just inside the baseline for an amazing catch, to make 15-9 after Tavorous Jones’ successful two-point conversion.
Both teams traded a series of punts to begin the second half. With 3:27 left in the third quarter, Keandre Jones would intercept Johnson and return 32 yards for the go ahead score—giving the Eagles the 16-15 lead. The Mustangs would retake the lead halfway through the fourth quarter after Tavorous Jones connected with Hewlen on a 46-yard completion that would lead to a three yard touchdown run by Marenco. Tavorous Jones would a second two-point conversion to make it 23-16.
Andress wide receiver Jeremiah Cooper would have to replace Jeremiah Tosky at quarterback and gave a valiant effort to drive the Eagles for they tying score. Unfortunately, the Eagles would come as they were unable to get lined up as time ran out and were called for offensive offsides with one second remaining. Without any timeouts remaining, the Eagles were unable to stop the required ten second runoff and that would end the game.
Alec Marenco was the Speaking Rock Player of the game with four catches for 54 yards, completing a 21-yard touchdown pass, having a rushing touchdown, and coming up with three key stops that forced Andress punts. AJ Johnson finished 7 of 13 for 98 yards and added 67 rushing yards and a touchdown. Robert Hall had 62 yards rushing on 14 carries, while Tavorous Jones added 36 rushing yards, 44 receiving yards, and a 46 yard completion. For the Eagles, Travon Ware led Andress with 83 rushing yards on 12 carries.
