It was a barn burner down at Eastlake High School. A back and fourth chess match between the Lady Falcons and Lady Sliver Foxes did not disappoint. As in the words of Eastlake Coach Joi Woodard put it “We had to dig deep for it”.
In the first half for the falcons it was all Cheyanne Bonilla and she bursted for 15 points out of Eastlake’s 32. She would finish with 25 by the end of the game a huge chunk of the offense. By the 2nd half Herrera, and a few others would help carry the offense down the stretch.
Anahi Saenz for the Sliver Foxes kept them in the game with her doing a bit of everything on both sides of the ball finishing with 18 points. Jefferson would hang in the game fighting for offense rebounds and scoring second chance points. 15 points came for the 3 line in the first half.
Both teams would have to adjust to each other’s game. Karina Chacon checked in late into the game and caught fire immediately hitting three back to back 3’s. That flipped the lead in favor of the foxes by one point mid way through the 4th quarter and from then on the lead would trade off in a seesaw fashion. Eastlake would allow fewer offense rebounds and less 2nd chance points in the 2nd half which was essentially the difference going forward.
Down the stretch mistakes being made were crucial for both teams, Eastlake was able to capitalize on turnovers and commit fewer near the end thus pulling away and cutting down the nets at the end of the game to claim the bi-district championship.
