El Paso, Texas – In a rematch of the 2018 bi-district round, Hanks had four score in double figures Monday night to take down state ranked Andress 78-75 in the 2019 Class 5A Region I bi-district round in a double overtime thriller.
Hanks will now play Wichita Falls Rider in the area round after going blow-for-blow for the entire forty minute tilt with Andress who finished the regular season ranked 22nd in the TABC poll.
The Eagles controlled the first half, leading by as much as eight points and took a 30-24 lead into the halftime break.
Andress’ freshman forward Isaac Padilla was clutch in the first half, leading the Eagles with 22 points for the game, but the Knights staged a fourth quarter comeback to steal a playoff win on the road.
Jason Fernandez led the Knights with 19 points and was a key contributor as Hanks cut the Andress lead to 46-43 heading into the fourth quarter.
Jazz Robinson chipped in 17 points for the Knights and his efforts on the boards gave Hanks plenty of life in the fourth quarter as they outscored Andress 17-14 to send the game into overtime.
Andress’ Keshon White had a chance for the win at the end of regulation but missed a short floater at the buzzer. White, Andress’ most experienced player, fouled out in the first overtime after scoring 14 points.
Darius Barclay scored 19 points for Andress and sent the game into double overtime with a 3-pointer to tie it at 65-65, but Hanks controlled the final overtime from the opening tip to send a finish a major Region I upset.
Sal Fernandez added 17 points, and Kyle Malone scored all 18 of his points in the second half as Hanks put away Andress with about a minute left in the second overtime, and Jason Fernandez sealed the game away at the free throw line.
Hanks will play Wichita Falls Rider in the area around Friday at a time and place to be determined.
