Gallegos Leads Franklin to Bi-District Championship

Led by UTEP signee Katia Gallegos the Franklin Cougars defeated the Midland Lee Rebels 52-47 in overtime to win the Bi-District Championship.  Franklin is the only 6A girls team still alive as Americas, Montwood and Pebble Hills all failed to advance in their Bi-District games.

It was evident right from the start that this game would come down to the wire and it very much did.  This game was tied at the half before Franklin outscored Lee 14-9 in the third quarter to take what looked like a comfortable lead into the final frame.  However this Lee team, who played with a heavy heart all season with the passing of teammate Essence Glover in September would keep on coming back.  Down by eight in the latter part of the fourth quarter, Lee would go on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 42 and even had the ball at the end of regulation for a shot to win the game.

Overtime would go to the Cougars however as they outscored Lee 10-5 led by their sensational guard Katia Gallegos. She finished the night with 27 points and did a little bit of everything. She would drive to the basket and finish, get fouled or drop it off to one of her teammates.  It was a sensational game all around by Franklin who now moves on to face Arlington Bowie in the Area Round of the UIL State Playoffs.
