EL PASO, Texas – Down 21-20 heading into the fourth quarter, a pair of Robert Hall touchdowns runs in the fourth quarter, mixed with some great offensive execution and a big defensive stop helped Burges hold off Eastlake in a 35-27 win Thursday night at Mustang Stadium.
The win moves Burges to 2-1 on the season after the Mustangs put up exactly 400 yards of total offense. Eastlake posted 387 total yards off offense but falls to 0-3 on the season.
As expected, this was a back-and-forth affair, with Burges putting together two key fourth quarter scoring drives, along with their defense answering the call in the fourth quarter with a key stop in the final minutes.
Burges led 13-7 after a 31-yard scramble from Tavorus Jones ended in a spectacular touchdown run. That score answered a 69-yard hook and latter play from Eastlake on the ensuing possession which had tied things up a 7-7 early on.
The Mustangs took a 20-14 lead into the halftime break, but Orion Olivas tossed his third of four total touchdowns of the night with 45 seconds left in the third quarter to give Eastlake that 21-20 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Hall finished the night 81 yards rushing, and three touchdowns, his 16-yard run with 10:25 left in the third quarter gave Burges the lead back at 28-21 after Jones ran in the two point conversion.
Although Olivas had a great night, throwing for 297 yards and four touchdowns and found Matt Jones for their second touchdown connection a few minutes after Burges took the lead. With a chance to tie, the extra point was botched by the Falcons, and Burges held a 28-27 lead with 8:21 left.
Two minutes and ten seconds later, Hall ran in his third touchdown of the night with 6:11 left in the game, and Burges led 35-27 to cap off another quick scoring drive for the Mustangs.
Blas Compean returned the ensuing kickoff nearly 40 yards, placing Eastlake inside Burges territory to start a possible game tying drive. Eastlake drove deep into Burges territory, but were facing a fourth and 17 from the Burges 22-yard line with less than three minutes to play.
Olivas fired a pass into the endzone on that key fourth down that was tipped by both teams and fell incomplete, allowing Burges to run out the clock and celebrate a big win for their program.
Burges quarterback Audwin Johnson went 16-for-22 passing for 199 yards and a touchdown the talented junior also ran for 75 yards. Switch blade offensive weapon Tavorus Jones ran for 45 yards, caught six passes for 97 yards for the Mustangs and had the highlight reel touchdown run in the first half.
Matt Jones caught 10 passes for 124 yards, and two touchdowns for Eastlake, Daine Kirtley caught six passes for 105 yards and a pair of scores for the Falcons as well.
Hall earned Speaking Rock Player of the Game honors as turned it in on the fourth quarter and came up with some huge runs including the two touchdown runs in the fourth quarter.
Burges will face Socorro next week while, while Eastlake will host Pebble Hills.
