El Paso High Slips Past Bowie in double overtime 98-97

El Paso, Texas – In a win or go home situation, Bowie and El Paso High went down to the wire as the district 1-5A race for the final playoff spot will be sorted out this weekend.

El Paso used a handful of big runs to survive a hard fighting Bowie squad and will face Austin tomorrow for the official playoff play-in game at Jefferson which tips off at 2 pm.

Jack Yellen led the Tigers with a game-high 29 points, 20 of which came in the first half, both Johnny Melvin Jr. and Fernando Villegas added 21 points for El Paso High.

The Tigers led 46-38 at halftime, and appeared in control, but Bowie was able to outscore El Paso 26-20 in the third quarter with a 26-15 run that gave them a 64-63 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Things went back and forth from the start of the fourth quarter until the second overtime.  Regulation ended in a 86-all tie in a game filled with drama and high octane action.

Both teams slowed things down in the second overtime, and the game came down to a few crucial possessions in where Bowie opted for a quick two point shot down by three as time expired in the second overtime.

Six players scored in double figures for Bowie led by Adrian Toney who scored 24 points.

El Paso High will face off with Austin tomorrow at 2 pm, winner goes to the playoffs and plays at Parkland next Monday. Tomorrow’s game can be heard live on Town Talk Sports El Paso starting at 1:50 pm.
