With both the El Dorado Aztecs and the Coronado Thunderbirds trying to bounce back from a week one loss, both teams started with explosive kickoff returns to start in their opponents’ territory.

The Aztecs were the first and only to strike in the first quarter with a 9-yard pass from Christopher Bustillos to Kris Martin. The quarter ended with the Aztecs on top, 6-0.

Both teams opened up offensively in the second quarter, as Ben Carney connected with Dominic Lopez on a 38-yard TD pass with 13 seconds into the 2nd quarter to give the T-Birds their first lead, 7-6. El Dorado answered with a 21-yard pass from Bustillos to Chris Harris to make it 12-7 for the Aztecs.

With over 4 minutes left in the second quarter, Coronado’s Ben Carney scored with an 11-yard QB keeper to make it 14-12, Coronado.

The last score of the half was when El Dorado QB, Christopher Bustillos, had a 7-yard QB keeper for a score to end the first half with the Aztecs up, 18-14.

It was a defensive battle in the second half, with the sole score in the middle of the third quarter with a 61-yard TD run by Coronado’s Michael Williams.

Coronado’s Jake Cox had two important plays at the end of the game – a key sack to end El Dorado’s last drive and a first down at the end to allow the Thunderbirds to go into victory formation and come out victorious, 20-18.

The Speaking Rock player of the game was Thunderbird QB, Ben Carney as he has one TD on the ground and one in the air.

Next week, the Aztecs will host the Andress Eagles at the SAC and Coronado will travel to Carlsbad.
