El Paso, Texas — Senior guard Tristen Newton scored 43 points in the championship game, leading an exciting second half comeback to beat San Antonio Roosevelt 66-57 to capture the 2018 McDonald’s Classic Basketball Tournament title.
The Mustangs went 5-0 over the weekend, while Newton took home MVP honors after averaging 41.4 points per game during the tournament. Burges has now won seven straight games, and is 2-0 in district play.
Roosevelt built a 32-25 halftime lead, and led by as much as 10 points, but the Mustangs gritty defense effort, and the scoring ability of Newton were too much to overcome.
Darryan Taylor scored 15 points in the championship game as the Mustangs improve to 12-3 overall on the season.
On the girls side, Lynwood High School from Lynwood, California defeated Andress High School in the championship game 69-61. Andress went 3-1 over the weekend, Hannah Cooper scored 24 points in the championship game for Andress.
