With this game having huge implications for both teams, both Coach Pichardo of the Austin Panthers and Coach Routledge of the Burges Mustangs knew they had to bring their best team forward. If Austin wins, they get to share the district title with Burges. If Burges wins, they are sole district champions – which hasn’t happened since 1967.
The Mustangs received the ball to begin the game and they had a couple of first downs, but were forced to punt it. The Panthers had a 3 and out on their first possession. The Mustangs were held to 118 yards offensively in the first half.
The Panthers gained momentum with a Ulysses Sanchez interception and that led them to their first score with 55 seconds left in the first quarter, with a 2-yard QB keeper by Daniel Orozco.
Isiah Witterstauter scored Austin’s only other score in the first half with a 23-yard TD run to take the Panthers into halftime with a 14-0 lead.
The second half was a defensive battle between both teams. Both teams were held to field goals, as Burges had one for their only score of the game, while Austin’s Adrian Moreno had a pair of Field Goals to give the Panthers the 20-3 victory. The Austin Panthers and Burges Mustangs are co-district champions.
The Speaking Rock Player of the game was William Rodriguez with 75 yards on the ground and a stellar defensive showing.
There will be a flip for playoff seeding Saturday morning.
