On a beautiful Friday evening in northeast El Paso, the Town Talk El Paso Super Eight #1 ranked team Parkland Matadors defeated the visiting Horizon Scorpions 62-20. It was Homecoming at “The Park” and the Matadors once again showed that they are the team the team to beat in District 1-5A DII.
Horizon won the toss and elected to defer to the 2nd half. The opening series for the Matadors set the tone for the game as Parkland started at their own 35 yard line. Three plays later, Junior QB Gabriel Herrera threw a 45 yard strike to Senior WR Khatib Lyles to put the Mats up 7-0 with 11:15 left to play in the 1st Quarter, Lyles first of two TDs in the 1st Quarter. Horizon was able to put to together drives with their use of two QBs, Sophomore Carlos Teran and Isaiah Quijas but could not find the end zone.
At the half, the score was 34-6. Senior RB Deion Hankins continued his climb up the Texas High School Football record books with 296 yards and 2 TDs. The UTEP commit started the night with 6,361 career rushing yards and was in 59th place all time in Texas, he will move up the list with 6,657 yards this week. Matador QB Herrera was 11-23-224 and 4 TDs, he also ran for another. WR Lyles caught 10 passes for 125 yards and 3 TDs. One of his TDs was a rushing TD for 59 yards. Horizon RB/QB Isaiah Quijas ran for 138 yards and 2 TDs.
Our Casa Nissan Player of the Game was Senior RB Deion Hankins. In the end, on Homecoming Night, the Parkland Matadors showed why they are the #1 team in our Super Eight Poll.
Next up for the Horizon Scorpions will be meeting with the Canutillo Eagles at Canutillo.
Parkland will travel to Riverside to play the Rangers next Friday.
