Thursday, October 10th

#1 Franklin Cougars (5-0) @ #2 Americas Trailblazers (4-1)

Approx. 7:30 pm, Socorro Student Activities Center

Broadcasters: Alex Nicolas and Tony Grijalva

Channels: Americas  https://www.towntalksportselpaso.com/americas-trail-blazers/

The top two teams in the city meet up in a highly anticipated mega match up.  Star power will be all over the field for both teams.  Americas running back Aaron Dumas has ran for over 220 yards in each of his last four games and is averaging 309.5 yards per game during that same stretch.  The Blazers aren’t all about Dumas on offense.  Quarterback Mike Nowell is averaging 15.5 yards per completion and has thrown touchdown passes to six different receivers.  Americas’ defense ranks fourth in country in sacks with 44.5, that figure leads the state. The Franklin offense is 24th in the state in total yards on offense led by the ultra-calm and cool Danny Walther who has tossed 16 touchdowns and has ran for four more rushing touchdowns.  Four different Cougars have caught 12 or more passes so far this season.  New Mexico commit Gabe Stonewall is averaging 19.2 yards per reception and has seven touchdown receptions.  Linebacker David Powers will be tasked with slowing down Dumas and will be one of the key match up in this game.  Pride, and a district title is on the line.  This one is tough and too close to call, but Dumas playmaking and the Blazer defense could be the difference, but Franklin has so many weapons.  What a fun game to start the week.

#4 Parkland Matadors (5-0) @ Hanks Knights (3-1)

7:00 pm, Excalibur Stadium

Broadcasters: Alex Nicolas and Tony Grijalva

Channels: Hanks https://www.towntalksportselpaso.com/hanks-knights/

A city record could be broken in this high-flying season opener between stellar offensive units.  Hanks wide receiver Mykal Blanco is just 52 yards away from breaking the city’s all-time receiving yards record.  Blanco holds the city’s career touchdown reception record with 40 touchdown grabs.  The Hanks offense averages 460.7 passing yards per game with quarterback Aaron Molina completing 58 percent of his passes and has thrown 16 touchdowns to just two interceptions. Parkland also brings their explosive offense that is averaging 422.8 yards per game.  Gabe Herrera has similar passing numbers like Molina.  Herrera completes 60 percent of his passes and has thrown 14 touchdowns to just two interceptions.  The key in this could be a running game as both teams will have protect any lead, they build due to the shootout potential of this game.  Should be lots of points and yards, Parkland’s experience could pull away late

Jefferson Sliver Foxes (2-4, 1-1) @ #5 Burges Mustangs (4-1, 1-0)

7:00 pm kickoff, Mustang Stadium

Broadcasters: Chris Gomez and Alex Rodriguez

Channels: Burges https://www.towntalksportselpaso.com/burges-mustangs/

The Mustangs are coming off one of their biggest wins in program history, while Jefferson is looking keep up in the race for the playoffs in District 2-5A DII.  Burges’ three-headed monster in the backfield with quarterback AJ Caldwell, running back Robert Hall, and do-it-all athlete Tavorus Jones is one of the best attacks in District 2-5A DII, and all three are under classmen.  Jefferson has a potent rushing attack as well led by Arturo Rubio is averaging 6.2 yards per carry and is another standout underclassman.  Burges confidence is sky high, giving the Mustangs a big edge in this game.  Jefferson always fights hard and will look to run the ball and play keep away.

#6 Montwood Rams (3-2) @ Coronado Thunderbirds (1-4)

7:00 kickoff, Quarles-Brooks Stadium

Broadcasters: Sergio Robali and Henry Reyna

Channels: Coronado https://www.towntalksportselpaso.com/coronado-t-birds/

Two teams trending in the opposite direction as district play opens meet for a chance at a 1-0 start in the race for a playoff spot.  Montwood has won back-to-back games to end a tough non-district slate.  Rams running back Chris Ramos is playing at an MVP level running for well over 100 yards in back-to-back wins.  The Montwood defense has also shown improvement marks and will tasked to slow down the Coronado ground game.  The T-Birds must protect the football and capitalize on any mistakes Montwood makes during this game.  Coronado will be hungry to stop their losing streak, while the Rams will be playing with confidence.  Look for another big game from Montwood’s Chris Ramos.  Ramos and the Rams should roll, but Bob Anderson always makes key adjustments during district play.

El Paso Tigers (0-6, 0-2) @ Austin Panthers (4-2, 1-1)

7:00 pm kickoff, R.E McKee Stadium

Broadcasters: Michael Montes and Mark Mena

Channels: Austin https://www.towntalksportselpaso.com/austin-panthers/

The third oldest rivalry in Texas renews Friday night.  Austin and El Paso meet for the 89th time in the Battle of the Claw.  Austin is the clear favorite with their effective running game featuring Isaiah Witterstauter and Will Rodriguez.  The Tigers showed some life on offense last week against Irvin but came up short and are still looking for their first win. Even though Austin is a heavy favorite, expect El Paso to play with tons of energy and look for the Tigers to pull out all the stops in trying to upset their heated Rival.  El Paso’s best rivalry takes center stage Friday night.

Ysleta Indians (3-2) @ Canutillo Eagles (4-1)

7:00 pm kickoff, C. Julius & Irene Lowenberg Stadium

Broadcasters: Abel Carrillo and Peter Carrillo

Channels: Canutillo https://www.towntalksportselpaso.com/canutillo-isd/

An interesting match up on the far west side opens District 1-5A DII play.  Canutillo bounced back before the bye week and put it all together in a big win over 6A Coronado.  Carlos Amato returned to the lineup and will be a big factor in this game.  The Senior is averaging 9.9 yards per carry and is a home threat on special teams.  Ysleta boasts an explosive offense that is averaging 430.8 yards per game. The Indians have a lot of offensive weapons at their disposal like wideouts Lucas Flores and Gio Martinez along with running back Dathon Loray.  Turnovers have been an issue for Ysleta along with their defense.  This could be a high scoring game, but Canutillo’s defense gives them a slight edge.

Eastwood Troopers (1-4) @ Eastlake Falcons (1-4)

Approx. 7:30 pm kickoff, Socorro Student Activities Center

Broadcasters: Mike Tipton and Mark Saldana

Channels: Eastlake https://www.towntalksportselpaso.com/eastlake-falcons/

Lots of offense, and the inside track at a district title should be on display Friday night at the SAC.  Both teams have struggled out of the gate record wise, but tough schedules are the culprits.  As district 1-5A DI play opens, look for both to complete for a top seed in the playoffs.  Eastwood has a big question at quarterback as Christian Castaneda is questionable with an injury.  Eastlake quarterback Orion Olivas has thrown for 1,550 yards and 14 touchdowns so far.  His main target wideout Matthew Jones who poised for a 1,000-yard receiving season.  Without Castaneda, Eastwood will turn to their youth, and hope a quick growth is near.  Both teams will put up points, it should come down to the last possession.
