CANUTILLO, Texas – Canutillo and Parkland, both undefeated in district, stepped out on the field late Friday night with the hopes of claiming the 1-5A DII championship. Unfortunately, the showdown never amounted to the hype as Parkland win big 41-7 and capture another district title.
The Matadors ground game paved the way for the offense as sophomore running back Mark Obonan punched in a rushing touchdown on the opening drive. Parkland and their tightfisted defense made life difficult for Canutillo, not allowing the Eagles to establish a run game.
Linebackers Xavier Simmons and Jeremiah Norris showcased their speed and outmatched Canutillo running backs throughout the night. However, the Speaking Rock player of the game goes to Parkland senior quarterback Gabriel Herrera, who threw for 269 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Next week in the bi-district round, Parkland (10-0) will host Bowie (5-4) at Matador Stadium Friday, 7pm; whereas Canutillo (8-2) host Andress (7-3) at Lowenberg Stadium 7pm, Thursday.
