Canutillo, TX — Horizon showed that their defense still has sting by holding the Canutillo offense to only 7 points in a surprising 20-7 win that shook up the D2 1-5A standings.
On the opening drive, Horizon drove down the field on the legs of Isaiah Quijas. They caped off the drive with a 13 yard run from Quijas to take an early lead.
After Canutillo turned over the ball on their opening series. Horizon’s QB Jesus Areola came into the game and from the 2 yard line he gave the ball to Quijas for a 2 yard TD run. The extra point was missed and that left the score 13 to 0 in the Scorpions favor.
Canutillo star running back Carlos Amato was held to 35 yards for the half and was largely ineffective against the Horizon Defense.
The second half was different all around for both teams. Canutillo could not move the ball on the ground or through the air. Penalty flags started flying for holding against Horizon and on the Scorpions previous drive, Quijas fumbled the ball, only his second fumble in 135 carries this year.
Then with 3:36 left in the 3rd quarter, Sebastian Morales connected with Isaiah Quijas for a 61 yard TD pass that seemingly put this one away given how well Horizon’s defense played. After that, Horizon stopped the Eagles offense and used up the clock to win the game 20-7. Isaiah Quijas carried the ball 35 times for 151 yards and had another 80+ receiving yards to become the Casa Nissan Player of the Game.
