EL PASO, Texas – Canutillo continues to roll in a mix of old school fashion, smash mouth football.

The mix is very simple, ground and pound on offense and tough defense.

Early on Canutillo forced three turnovers which resulted in 21 points in the first quarter on short fields. The first Eagle touchdown was a 30 yard bomb on 4th down to Logan Flores.

Second touchdown would come via quarterback sneak by Caleb Rodriguez from one yard out and the third would be a six yard reception by Micah Galaviz from Rodriguez.

Caleb Rodriguez would be the main quarterback in the first half but coach Brooks switched with LJ Martin in the second half.

Overall in the first half Canutillo would have three rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns and a commanding lead 34-7 heading into the break.

Horizons young backfield would try to carry the load offensively but against a fast and aggressive Canutillo defense the young Scorpions would struggle most of the first half. Ernie Garcia would be called upon through the ground and air, catching the only touchdown for the scorpions right as the half ended.

The second half would be a fast ticking one as Canutillo would burn the clock with the run.

In the third quarter Canutillo would only throw the ball three times although one of those passes would result in a touchdown as Josiah Burciaga would catch a 21 pass to extend the lead to 41-7.

The next touchdown wouldn’t come until late in the fourth quarter, LJ Martin would find the end zone from four yards out on a quarterback keeper going up 48-7.

It was a well balanced offensive attack for the Eagles. The stat sheet was filled across the board with numerous producer. Joaquin Carrasco would be the lone rusher over 100 yards, and one touchdown. Caleb Rodriguez ended the night with 118 total yards and 3 touchdowns. LJ Martin would finish with 115 total yards of offense and 3 total touchdowns.

Both Canutillo quarterbacks had similar finishes in different styles. Making both Rodriguez and Martin our Speaking Rock Co-players of the game.

Canutillo will play Parkland for the 1-5A DII district title next week, Horizon is offically eliminated from playoff contention.
