EL PASO, Texas – Canutillo quarterback Caleb Rodriguez accounted for four total touchdowns, as the Canutillo defense shut down Mountain View in the first half to beat the Lobos 27-14 at Lobo Stadium Friday night.
Canutillo ran for 142 yards as a team, while the defense held the Lobo offense to just 32 total yards and two first downs in the first half enroute to a 3-0 start to the 2019 season.
Rodriguez accounted for all four of the Eagles touchdowns on the evening. Three came in the first half as the Eagles took a 21-0 halftime lead after Canutillo scored two touchdown drives on short fields.
Canutillo got on the board first as Mountain View fumbled on their opening possession, giving Canutillo ball at the Lobo 22-yard line. Rodriguez ran it in from 2-yards out four plays after the fumble recovery to open the scoring and ran in another drive finishing two-yard touchdown run with 3:28 left until halftime.
Canutillo called off the dogs after Rodriguez ran in his third rushing touchdown of the evening at the 2:36 mark of the third quarter which put Canutillo ahead 27-0.
Eagles star running back Carlos Amato was held out of the game due to rest as their rivalry game with Del Valle looms next week.
Despite two offensive turnovers, and a special teams turnover, Mountain View put up 178 yards of offense in the second half, and got two late touchdowns in the fourth quarter as they put up a great fight. Chris Gamboa finished the night 7-for-12 passing for 103 yards, and a touchdown pass.
Rodriguez was named Speaking Rock Player of the Game, he threw for 85 yards and a touchdown, and ran in three short scores on the ground.
Canutillo improves to 3-0 on the season.
