Story by Christian Molinar
Socorro’s community came out in full support Friday night. Standing room only was available on the track right before kickoff. It was homecoming for the Bulldogs against the Burges Mustangs. It also was the last varsity game that would be played on that field.
The Mustangs would prove to be too much for the Bulldogs early on.
Burges’ offense featured three names early and often, AJ Caldwell, Robert Hall and Tavorus Jones. Caldwell would make his usual start at quarterback to start the game but by the mid second quarter he would flip roles with Jones. Tavorus Jones and Robert Hall would dominate the night, all 6 touchdowns would come from them.
Socorro couldn’t get started on offense and when they would get a spark, a penalty would bring them back. It was a rough day for the offense who only put together one complete drive, capped off with a 14 yard touchdown pass to Jakob Vetterkind late in the third quarter.
Burges’ size, speed and strength proved to be too much for the Bulldogs even on a special night like this. Tavorus Jones was our Speaking Rock Player of the Game, who caught passes, ran and threw the ball. Featured at three positions but mostly at quarterback, he threw for two touchdowns, and ran for another score and caught a touchdown pass.
