Burges Dominates Ysleta 45-13, Advances to Area Round

The Burges Mustangs went into their Class 5A Division II Bi-District game over a wounded Ysleta Indians with all guns blazing.  The Indians came in after losing two offensive weapons to injury last week.

The game began with both teams trading punts, however, Ysleta’s punt attempt was blocked and went out of bounds from endzone—giving the Mustangs the early 2-0 lead.  Early in the second quarter, AJ Caldwell (Audwin Johnson) connected with Alec Marenco on a 59-yard touchdown pass, making it 9-0.

On the ensuing Indians’ drive, a high snap went into the endzonefor a second safety to get us to 11-0.  After Joshua Hew len’s 63-yard return on the kickoff, Robert Hall strolled into the endzonefrom 17 yards out to get to 18-0.  On the next Burges drive, Tavorous Jones added another rushing touchdown from 33 yards away—making it 25-0.  Ysleta closed out the first half scoring when Isaac Jaramillo stepped in as quarterback and found Lucas Flores—who made an acrobatic catch—for a 14-yard touchdown to make it 25-7 at halftime.

In the second half, Victor Lopez intercepted a Jaramillo pass intended for Andres Martinez and returned it 32 yards for the score getting the game to 32-7.  On the ensuing kickoff, Matthew Pacheco recovered a fumble and took into the endzoneto extend the Mustang lead to 38-7.

The Mustangs brought in their backups in the fourth quarter, when Manny Banuelos found the endzone on a 24-yard run to get us to 45-7.  Flores found Martinez on 64-yard pass to close out the scoring at 45-13.

Robert Hall and Tavorous Jones were named the Speaking Rock Players of the Game with Hall rushing for 113 yards on 12 carries and one touchdown, and Jones rushing for 71 yards and a score plus added 46 receiving yards. The Mustangs will take on the 10-1 Lubbock Cooper Pirates.  According to Coach James Routledge, they would play either at Fort Stockton or at Midland’s Grande Communications Stadium—it will be finalized on Saturday.  The Indians finish their season at 6-5.
