EL PASO, Texas – On a beautiful Friday night on the campus of Bowie High at Baty-Simang Stadium, the Bowie Bears pounded out a 45-7 victory over the previously undefeated Ysleta Indians.
Bowie won the opening toss and elected to receive the ball and promptly moved down the field with a mix of run and pass from Senior quarterback Justin Diaz, running back Andrew Gallardo, and talented wideout Carlos Varela. Diaz ran the Bears first TD in from eight yards out and Bowie had a clock consuming opening drive lead of 6-0.
On the Indians opening possession, Ysleta quarterback Adrian Jaquez-Castaneda through the first of his four interceptions to give the ball back to Bowie. Bowie’s Carlos Varela picked him off twice on the evening.
With the score 24-7 and 1:30 left to play before half, Bowie got the ball back and called up a trick halfback pass, running Willie Carrasco threw an 83 yard touchdown pass to a streaking Carlos Varela and Bowie led at the half 31-7.
Ysleta got the ball to start the second half but the Indian’s offense couldn’t muster a sustainable drive and that was the way most of the night went for Ysleta.
Jaquez-Castaneda ended the game 11-for-29 and 130 yards.
Gallardo finished with 15 carries and 163 yards. Diaz was the workhorse tonight as he lead the Bears with three rushing touchdowns and was 10-for-21 passing for 188 yard and two touchdowns.
Speaking Rock Player of the Game was Bowie’s Justin Diaz.
Next up for Ysleta will be a home game with a resurgent Bel Air squad. Bowie will have the El Paso High Tigers at home next week.
