Americas rolls past Montwood 69-27 to claim 1-6A District Title

EL PASO, Texas – The Americas Trailblazers thoroughly dominated the Montwood Rams 69-27 to capture the first outright district title in school history Friday night at the SAC.

The Blazer defense picked off Montwood quarterback Sebastian Galvan five times, while quarterback Michael Nowell accounted for eight total touchdowns as the Blazers lock up the number seed in 6A DII bracket and will host a playoff game at the SAC.

On the game’s very first play from scrimmage, Galvan was picked off by Americas’ Derek Saldivar who returned into Ram territory, and seven plays later Nowell ran it in from three yards out for the games first score.

Galvan would settle in on the next series and hooked up with Aaron Morales for a 15-yard touchdown pass to tie things up at 7-7 with 6:55 first quarter.

Then it was all Blazers from there.

Americas scored 21 straight points as Nowell threw his first touchdown pass of the game finding Ryan Acosta for a 23-yard score as Americas led 28-7 with 7:54 left until halftime.

The Blazers scored on their first seven possessions and led 42-14 at halftime, the seventh possession ended on a 57-yard touchdown pass from Nowell to Ryan Acosta to open the third quarter as Americas led 48-14 just 26 seconds into the third quarter.

Americas’ junior athlete Evan Chislom picked off three passes on the evening, and caught two touchdown passes.  Peter Velarde also intercepted a Gavlan pass and took it to the house for five-yard pick six which made it 55-27 Americas with 4:28 left in the third quarter.

Americas piled up 522 total yards of offense, Nowell ended the night 21-for-26 passing for 277 yards, five touchdowns through the air, and he ran three rushing touchdowns which accounted for the Blazers first three scores.

Aaron Dumas ran for 223 yards and had a 60-yard touchdown run with 5:56 left until halftime which put Americas ahead 35-14.  Ryan Acosta caught nine passes for 158 yards and two scores.

But Chislom was the main story with his three interceptions and two touchdown catches, he finished the regular season with five interceptions, and now has 10 career interceptions.

Galvan threw for 240 yards and four touchdowns, but never recovered from a slow start in where he threw two interceptions on his first six pass attempts of the game.

Americas will host Wolfforth Frenship in the area round next week on either Thursday for Friday, Montwood will play Midland Lee at a date, time, and site to be determined.
